You are not confused about him.
You are confused about what his behaviour means. And that is a very different kind of confusion, one that is significantly harder to sit with because it does not have an obvious solution.
He is warm but inconsistent. Present but vague about the future. Interested enough to keep showing up but not intentional enough to make things clear. He has not said he is serious. He has not said he is not. He exists in that particular middle ground that is simultaneously the most hopeful and most exhausting place in Nigerian dating.
And you are trying to figure out what to do with that.
Why This Situation Feels So Difficult to Read
The reason you cannot get a clear read on this situation is not because you are not perceptive enough. It is because the signals are genuinely mixed.
A man who is not serious does not always look like a man who is not serious. He may call regularly. He may show up when you need him. He may say things that sound like the beginning of something real. He may introduce you to people in his life. None of these things, individually or together, are proof of serious intent. But they are enough to keep hope alive. And hope, in this particular situation, is what makes clarity so hard to access.
The mind does something specific when it wants something to be true. It elevates the evidence that supports that conclusion and minimises the evidence that challenges it. So the days he was warm and present feel more significant than the conversations about the future that went nowhere. The kind gesture feels more real than the consistent vagueness.
You are not being naive. You are being human. But it is costing you clarity.
The Questions That Actually Help
Instead of asking “is he serious,” which is a question only he can fully answer, there are questions you can ask yourself that will give you more reliable information.
Has he ever, without being prompted, brought up where this is going? A man who is genuinely thinking about a future with you will reference it naturally. Not necessarily in formal terms but in the small ways that reveal how his mind is working. He mentions something you could do together in six months. He talks about introducing you to someone important. He makes plans that extend beyond the next few weeks. If those references have never appeared without you initiating them, that is information.
When you have tried to have a direct conversation about where things are going, what happened? Did he engage honestly, even if imperfectly? Or did he deflect, minimise, or make you feel like you were asking for too much by wanting to know? How a man responds to a sincere question about the direction of a relationship tells you considerably more than his answer to the question itself.
Is the uncertainty you are feeling new or has it been consistent since the beginning? Some uncertainty is normal in the early stages of getting to know someone. But uncertainty that has persisted for months, that has not reduced despite time and consistency, is not uncertainty about the relationship. It is the relationship telling you something that has not been said out loud yet.
What His Behaviour Is Already Telling You
Here is the uncomfortable part of this conversation.
By the time a woman is asking whether a man is serious about her, she usually already has enough information to answer that question. What she is actually looking for is not more data. It is permission to trust what she already knows.
A man who is serious about a woman does not leave her wondering for extended periods of time. Not because he is perfect or because he has everything figured out, but because his desire to be clear with her outweighs his comfort with ambiguity. He understands that her time is not unlimited and he treats that understanding as a reason to communicate with intention.
If you have been wondering for months and nothing has shifted, that pattern itself is the answer you have been looking for.
What to Actually Do
The first thing to do is stop waiting for clarity to arrive on its own.
Clarity in this situation does not come from more time, more patience, or more evidence gathering. It comes from a direct, honest conversation that you initiate because you have decided that you deserve to know where you stand.
That conversation does not need to be dramatic. It needs to be honest. Something as straightforward as: I enjoy what we have but I realise I do not actually know where this is going for you, and I need to understand that before I invest further.
Then listen. Not to what you hoped he would say. To what he actually says and how he says it.
If his answer is clear, warm, and forward-facing, you have something to work with. If his answer is vague, defensive, or makes you feel foolish for asking, you also have something to work with. Both answers give you what you came for.
What to Do With the Answer
If he is serious, the conversation will have moved things forward and you will feel it.
If he is not, or if his answer leaves you more confused than before, the most important thing you can do is resist the urge to reinterpret his response into something more favourable than it was.
A vague answer to a direct question is a clear answer. It is telling you that he either does not know what he wants, is not ready to be honest about it, or does not want what you want. None of those situations are served by continuing to wait.
You are allowed to decide that you want clarity more than you want this particular situation to work out. That is not giving up. That is choosing yourself.
And choosing yourself, clearly and without apology, is always the right move.
